Boost the Nutrition of Your Food (part I)

Updated: Feb 5, 2021

Boost Your Food Nutrition (part I) How would you like to increase the nutritional value of the food you eat? This series of Tracy Coe's Wellness Blogs will discuss several ways food nutrients are depleted and at the same time will give you tips that you can re-boost your food nutrients with a delicious recipe connected to each blog. I’m very much looking forward to sharing this with you!

Nutritional deficiency within our foods can come from many directions * Soils depleted from nutrients * Chemical toxins (pesticides) * Industrial farming * Processed foods (synthetic flavoring/vitamins, preservatives, GMO, sugar, caffeine, food additives) * Modern day over cooked foods and food prep techniques that destroy nutrients (high heat, microwave, peeling skins)

Soils & Chemicals Soil Nutrition Our foods are suppose to receive their nutrients from the soil. This is why an enormous and strong animal like an elephant can live off of grass alone! Back in 1935 Dr Carey Reams and Dr Charles Northern M.D said “the answer to America’s health problems lies in the soil.” Soils that aren’t healthy and fully nourished are not able to produce the quality of food needed to sustain truly healthy living. A bugs job! When plant food has less then its ideal level of nutrients, it releases methane and ammonia. This natural release of chemicals is natures’ sign that the plant is not healthy (aka sick) and it signals for insects, bugs, fungi to do their job of devouring the dying food. Note: a purpose of bugs/insects, is to eat plants that are sick and dying. If they would not do their job we would have landfills of spoiled foods.

Reams demonstrated if soils were properly nourished, there would be no need for pesticides, herbicides, etc. Plant foods when picked at peak and full ripeness ….. – contain its full complement of nutrients – would never spoil, rather it would just dehydrate (provided it was not cut into) – plant food could sit on a countertop and never spoil and no fungus no mold nor any pests would attack it Nutritional Food Facts * The anti-oxidant levels of our food have decreased over 50% since 1950. * In 1950, to get the same amount of Vitamin A from a single peach in the 1900s one would have to eat 4 peaches. Today, to get the same amount of vitamin A from a peach in 1950, one would have to eat 53 organic peaches. * Plant Nutrient Testing – Brix chart – This test correlates a summation of pounds of sucrose, fructose, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, hormones, and other solids in 100 pounds of plant juice. – Originally designed to test the quality of grapes for the wine industry all over the world – Brix reading varies directly with quality: – A poor, sour grape from worn out land may test 8 or less – A full-flavored delicious grape grown on rich soil may test a 24 or higher – A reading of 25+ indicates the food contains a symphony of complex nutrients for perfect health enhancing support – Today most people eat foods with a reading of 2 – 4, if organic store bought possibly an 8

Toxic chemicals herbicides, fungicides pesticides (aka organophosphates) Its worth repeating, an insects job is to devour weak, sick plants that lack quality nutrients. Sick plant foods attract insect infestations of epidemic proportions. The commercial agricultural response has been to create pesticides (organophosphates) to kill the insects. This allows for plants foods to grow physically large and beautiful, YET they are sick plants that contain poor nutrient levels and toxic chemicals that are being eaten by animals and humans.

Low level exposure hazardous to human health *Even low levels organophosphates have shown hazardous to human & environmental health. *Pesticides act on a set of brain chemicals closely related that is linked to ADHD. This can bring fetuses and young children in stages of brain development at high risk of brain damage. *Even the EPA lists organophosphates as very highly acutely toxic to bees, wildlife, and humans Chronic Toxicity: effects reported in workers repeatedly exposed include impaired memory and concentration, disorientation, severe depressions, irritability, confusion, headache, speech difficulties, delayed reaction times, nightmares, sleepwalking and drowsiness or insomnia. An influenza-like condition with headache, nausea, weakness, loss of appetite, and malaise *A 2008 USDA report of tested sampled produce by the agency indicated, 28% of frozen blueberries, 20% of celery, 27% of green beans, 17% of peaches, 8% of broccoli, 25% of strawberries contained traces of organophosphate.

Eat Nutritional Foods With more and more people being educated on the above, our options to by-pass eating sick foods and instead eat nutritionally rich food are expanding. Here are some ways how…. * Buy WHOLE organic (or non-chemical sprayed), that have not been processed or altered from their original state, but rather grown or raised as nature intended (aka without: chemical additives, drugs, hormones, pesticides and fertilizers) * Eat whole and seasonally (more to come in upcoming blog) * Buy from local farmers * Participate in a local food co-op * check-out www.localharvest.org enter your zip code and find farmers' markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area. * talk to your food suppliers –>how are the foods grown? –>how are the soils taken care of? –>what is used to detract bugs/unwanted species * test your foods –>taste test your produce –>how long does your plant foods last –>how soon does it start attracting bugs * Grow your own garden, herbs in pots, hydroponics, or in a community garden –>using aerators and compost vs. chemical fertilizers http://www.planetnatural.com/composting-101/ –>herbs in pots http://www.planetnatural.com/herb-gardening-guru/potted-herbs/ –>community garden https://communitygarden.org/find-a-garden/. http://hermosabeachcommunitygarden.com/ –>create nutrient rich soil by adding 1.
